Curious about my work at UCLA’s Center for the Transformation of Schools?
Dr. Kai Mathews
Educator. Researcher. Life Long Learner
I created The Liberatory Classroom to help educators design learning spaces where students can show up whole in the full potential and dignity of their humanity. As a former 8th grade teacher at High Tech High in San Diego; researcher at The Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education; and adjunct professor of Educational Equity at the University of San Diego, I've spent most of my 12-year career designing and advocating for innovative and human-centered classrooms that foster equity, intellectual curiosity, academic rigor, student autonomy, and critical consciousness. Currently, I am a research director at UCLA’s Center for the Transformation of Schools. My work centers on diversifying the educator workforce and humanizing the teaching profession. I am also an adjunct professor at Alder Graduate School Education where I work with pre-service teachers on building equitable classrooms and engaging curriculum.
